Most off-the-shelf recruitment software is built to serve every industry at once, which usually means it serves none of them particularly well. For a legal recruitment client of ours, that mismatch was the whole problem: their candidate pool doesn't sort neatly into generic "job title" fields — it sorts by practice area, seniority and the kind of firm a candidate is trying to move to or from. We built them a register that speaks that language natively.
This is a look at what we built, and why a bespoke internal tool beat yet another recruitment platform subscription.
The brief
The client runs a specialist legal recruitment practice, and their candidate pipeline was scattered across spreadsheets and inboxes — workable, but slow to search and easy to let go stale. They needed one place to hold every candidate's details and status, searchable and filterable the way their team actually thinks about candidates day to day: by practice area and role first, not by whatever fields a generic CRM happened to ship with.
What we built
The result is a single, purpose-built candidate register and dashboard, with:
- A full candidate record for each person — name, position, role, practice area, current status, current employer, location, and a direct LinkedIn link — all visible and searchable from one screen.
- Filtering built around how the team actually searches — by role, practice area, location and status, so narrowing "senior associates in banking & finance currently open to a move" takes seconds, not a scroll through a spreadsheet.
- A KPI strip at the top of the dashboard giving an at-a-glance read on the register — the numbers a principal or team lead wants before diving into individual candidates.
- A free-text search bar alongside the structured filters, for the moments where you remember a detail about a candidate but not which field it lives in.
Designed to look like theirs, not like ours
This is a detail we think matters more than it gets credit for: the register doesn't look like an InertiaAI product with the client's logo pasted on. It's styled in a restrained, professional palette — parchment tones, a deep ink blue, serif headings — deliberately closer to the register of a chambers or a law firm than to a typical SaaS dashboard. It was built to sit comfortably alongside the client's own brand and the expectations of the legal industry they work in, not to look like a template.
That's the same principle behind every custom build we do: the tool should feel like it was made for the business using it, because it was.
Why a bespoke register over another subscription
Generic recruitment CRMs charge per seat, bundle in features a two-or-three-person practice will never touch, and still make you bend your own workflow — practice areas, statuses, the works — into whatever categories the vendor decided on. A purpose-built register costs nothing per seat, holds exactly the fields this practice needs and no others, and can be reshaped the moment their process changes, because it isn't rented from anyone.
The takeaway
Not every business problem needs a platform. Sometimes it needs one well-built, well-designed tool that matches exactly how a small, specialist team already works — built once, owned outright, and styled to fit the business rather than the other way around.
