Not every useful tool needs to be a platform. Sometimes the most useful thing you can build is a single page that does one job — catalog a growing pile of documents and photos so they're actually findable later — and does it without asking anyone to learn new software.
We built exactly that: a lightweight, self-contained catalog for scanned documents and photos, and it's a pattern worth knowing about, because the underlying problem — "we have a growing pile of records and no fast way to find one again" — shows up in more businesses than you'd think.
What it does
- One record per item — type (document or image), a date, a language, a location, a short summary and a longer description, plus the file or photo itself.
- Capture straight from a camera — no separate scanning step or app; snap a photo of a document and it's in the catalog.
- Filter by type, language and date — with date filtering flexible enough to narrow by a full date, a year and month, or just a year, depending on how precisely you actually remember when something happened.
- CSV import and export — bring in an existing spreadsheet of records, or pull everything out again to work with elsewhere, so the catalog is never a one-way door.
- Light and dark mode, and a small stats strip up top showing how many records exist and how the collection breaks down — enough context to trust the tool at a glance.
Why this pattern is worth knowing about
Plenty of businesses have exactly this problem in some form — a compliance folder of scanned certificates, product photos that need a proper index, historical records that only live as paper until someone photographs them, a growing archive nobody's built a real system for because it "doesn't need a whole platform." That instinct is usually right. A dedicated document management system is real overhead — logins, hosting, ongoing cost — for a problem that a single, well-designed page can solve outright.
The tool runs entirely in the browser, needs no backend or database server to operate, and can be handed to someone as a single file. That's deliberate: the whole point is removing every piece of friction between "I have something to file" and "it's filed and searchable" — no server to stand up, no account to create, no app to install.
The takeaway
Most "we need better records" problems don't need a procurement process or a subscription — they need one afternoon and a tool built to do exactly one job well. If that sounds like a pile of documents, photos or records your business has been meaning to get organised, this is the kind of build that pays for itself in the first search that used to take twenty minutes.
